PILEATED WOODPECKER

Not to sure how well you can see this, but the other day Sweetman was looking out into the woods and there was our old friend the pileated woodpecker. He hasn't been around for quite awhile and I've been told that they are pretty illusive and don't often visit populated areas. Its always fun to catch a glimpse of these guys in the wild. They have huge anvil shaped heads with beaks that can drill major holes in the trees.  Their whole bodies measure about 15 to 18 inches so they are not a little bird by any means.

Fun to have this visitor come by now and then.

Cool! We had a woodpecker on one of our trees the other day, but it was much smaller than this one.

Yes, fun, as long as they are not on your house or roof! They seem to like mine.

That is sooooo cool! I have seen the holes that they make down in Battle Creek on the in-laws wooded land. I have not seen one out there or around here. So glad that you did. I would like to see one some day. Other than pictures that is.

My brother had a cottage up north and when we visited them we always looked for this bird. Often we would spot him but mostly we would only hear him picking away. The sound was always very loud. I never seen one in our woods.

When living in TN for my short 3 yrs I enjoyed to see and hear these...I always called them Woody Woodpecker..coming from Australia they were a treat for me..we have many noisy parrots here and of course the kookaburra...who laughs like crazy.
God Bless your day.
