Hardwood, Laminate, vinyl, tile????

OK, so I'm throwing out a question to any of you with wisdom beyond what I have about flooring. Yeah, that's what this post is all about.
We are currently looking at replacing a very worn out parquet floor in my kitchen. I originally wanted real hard wood but have since kinda ruled that out only because I have heard from others that the laminate is more durable, and hardwood is of course more costly, what say you???
I have considered vinyl but really don't think I would be happy with that. I do like some of the laminates but there are so many different kinds and grades that I get really frustrated trying to understand all of that. I do like the look of tile but once again I think that is a bit to expensive for my budget right now and besides its cold to walk on with bare feet.
Not to mention that the refrigerator is already almost rubbing on the bottom of one of the cupboards so we have to be very careful not to go with something to thick. We will have to remove the old flooring as it is, so that will be quite the job, but sweetman says he can handle it, with a little help of course.
So if any of you have a floor you really really like or don't like, help me out so I can finally make a decision.

we have had the same vinyl linoluim florring that came with our condo when we bought it.cremic tile can be broken if a heavy pot is dropped on it.Laminate can be ruined the same way.Ultimalty it is what makes you the happiest.

Well - I already told you but I'll put it into writing so you have the name. We have the Wilsonart laminate floor and so far I love it. Bob said it was very easy to install and it looks great. The main reason we chose it is the great review it gets and hearing from Elaine how it held up under the shovels of the fireman after their fire.
However - everyone has different needs, so that's just my blog! I'll be interested in what you end up with. Whatever you choose, I know it'll look great.

I love my new laminate floor! I have tile in my entry and love that too- but I wouldn't want it in my kitchen.
Have fun!

I have laminate in the entry way, kitchen and my dining room. I love it! When we built our house I went to a flooring store and the lady was very helpful. I explained that we had a dog and didn't want to have to replace in the next decade. It's been almost 10 years and I have 2 small places that someone dropped something and it landed on the corner and it shows. I have used crayons to cover them and it works pretty good. All it takes to clean it is warm WATER!!! I suggest laminate...Kae

Not that I have any of them, but from what I have seen in other people's houses, the hardwood has holes between the boards where dirt can fall. I really do not care for that. The laminate is so clean looking with no places for dirt to hide. The ceramic tile is wonderful but if it were the slick kind, any water might cause a fall. Also, the rough kind grabs dirt.

As far as what kind of laminate, I have never heard of the kind that Mari has but knowing her and Bob, it is probably the best. I have heard of one kind back in Ohio and it was called Pergo, I think. My friend loved it and it looked so great. I am sure that there are many kinds of laminate by now. It is fun to shop for new things for the house! Have fun!

I personally love hard wood floors, but here in base housing we have really ugly laminate or vinyl or whatever it is, I honestly don't know LOL

Thanks to all of you for the input, I will let you know what we decide on. It is fun looking but can be frustrating too.

I don't know enough about flooring to give you any advice. I would be curious to know what you decide to go with though, if you don't mind telling me.
