We have had hummers come to visit us for several years but have never observed this kind of play before. They dipped and dove, twisted and turned around each other and the feeder for hours and even bumped into the window a few times. They took short breaks to rest in the tree for only seconds at a time and returned to the activity of break neck speed wrestling in flight for the whole day and into the evening hours. Occasionally a third hummer joined in but most of the time it was just two of them.
This morning before I left for work it was barely light outside and I could see they were starting all over again. They must have the endurance of great might to keep this up for so long. Perhaps it is some kind of mating ritual. It that case maybe it was practice to chase after all their off spring once they are out of the nest. What ever it was they were a marvel to watch.
They must have finally tired out because no sign of the fast moving playtime was seen this evening.
What fantastic creatures God gives us to watch see His marvelous wonders in nature.
